Moving to Texas from Washington

The saying “Everything is bigger in Texas” could be right, as the state is the second-largest and second most populated state in the United States. According to 2020 U.S. Census data, Texas was the second most moved-to-state in the country after Florida.

So, why are people moving to Texas? The Lone Star State is an attractive option for many! Its economy is booming, so an increasing job market and employment opportunities are everywhere. Combined with a low cost of living, a low cost of housing and no state income taxes, people are drawn to the state now more than ever.

Since Texas is so large, there’s plenty of choice on where to settle down. The 269,000-square-mile-state has deserts, mountains, forests, ranchland and over 360 miles of coastline.

In addition to being home to Houston, San Antonio and Dallas – three of the largest cities in the country – Texas is also home to smaller cities known for their character. You can read more about Texas cities in the next section of this page.

Historically, the oil and gas industry has dominated the economy alongside the agriculture, energy, defense and healthcare industries, but as more young professionals move into Texas, a lot of innovation has taken hold in cities like Austin.

Startups have found their beginnings in Texas, starting small and some growing to employ hundreds of Texans. In addition to startups, the state is home to many Fortune 500 companies like ExxonMobil, GameStop, AT&T and more.

The Texas climate can be off-putting for some, especially those moving from the Pacific Northwest. Summer temperatures can average around 100 degrees in many parts of the state, and there isn’t much of a winter season to speak about except for a dip in temperature.

The average home price in Texas is only $190,000, which can be shocking for those moving from the Seattle area. One reason for low real estate prices is the state’s size – there is a lot of land to build on.

Austin: The capital of Texas, Austin has been a magnet for young professionals in recent years. In addition to its growing economy, Austin is the greenest urban region in the state and has a #2 spot of all cities in Texas for park ranking from the Trust for Public Land.

It’s also a great destination for foodies, it was rated as the #1 spot for the best food in Texas by Wallethub. Austin is known for its live music scene, having a lively nightlife, and being home to the University of Texas.

Houston: Houston is the largest city in Texas and the 4th-largest city in the country. With its massive size, there truly is something for everybody in Houston. Its Museum District gets over 7 million visitors annually, and the city is known for being the center of hip hop culture in Texas. Houston is also home to NASA’s Johnson Space Center, the headquarters of the human spaceflight and space shuttle programs.

Dallas: The Dallas-Fort Worth area in northern Texas is considered the financial hub of the Lone Star State. Home to the annual Texas State Fair, there is always something to do in Dallas. The city is known for having some of the best museums and galleries in the state. It’s also an excellent choice for those who love to be outdoors — 71% of Dallas residents live within a 10-minute walk to a park.

San Antonio: Situated in South Texas, San Antonio blends Mexican and Texan culture and cuisine, offering both a glimpse into the history of Texas and the future of the state. The city has a small-town feel due to the outward growth of the urban area. San Antonio is home to the Alamo, one of the most important historical monuments in Texas’ history.
