‘Twas The Night After Christmas

‘Twas the night after Christmas, when all through the house,
The movers were moving, even “Bob”, the stuffed mouse;
Boxes were packed by the front door with care,
In hopes that the moving truck soon would be there;

The children were bundled in the back of “Big Red”,
While visions of swimming pools danced in their heads;
And mamma so happy, and me so alive,
Had just buckled up for a long winter’s drive,

When out on the front lawn arose such a clatter,
I sprang from my seat to see what was the matter.
Our dogs to car windows, they jumped with a scratch,
We put them in kennels, we didn’t say “Fetch”.

The moon on the dry grass absent of snow,
Gave strange feelings of summer to the people below,
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But the moving truck loaded, and the words, “All clear”,

With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
He looked for a moment, just like St. Nick.
More rapid than eagles the movers they drove,
And whistled, and shouted, and moved down the road;

Now, Jim Bob! Now, Fredrick! Now, Lance and Bo Dixen!
On, Ronald! On Rupert! On, David and Fitzen!
To the top of the pass! So far past the mall!
Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!”

So much like a rubberband, movers were spry,
When they met with an obstacle, they dealt on the fly,
On over the mountain the moving truck flew,
With a truck full of toys, and “St. Nicholas” too.

And then, in a twinkling, I saw on the roof,
The snow softly falling, I needed more proof.
I rolled down the window, and held out my hand,
The cold touch of water, frozen lovely, so grand.

Up ahead on the road, a big fallen tree lay,
The movers were out and about on their way;
A massive sequoia they threw like a pack,
And they looked like small ants with a branch on their back.

Their eyes – how they twinkled! Their dimples so merry!
Their cheeks were like roses, their nose like a cherry!
They sang and they laughed like the seven dwarves shout,
And their coats were snow white even inside and out;

The stump of the pipe Nikolai held in his teeth,
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath;
He had a broad face and a little round belly,
That shook, when he laughed like a bowlful of jelly.

He was chubby and plump, with no wasted space,
And I couldn’t help smiling, a grin on his face;
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;

When arrived at our new home, he went straight to his work,
And arranged all our furniture; then turned with a jerk,
And out of his mouth the smoke it still flowed,
And giving a nod, out the doorway he strode;

He sprang to his seat, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight,

Happy Christmas to all, enjoy your new home tonight!”
