Moving to Puyallup

Puyallup, located just southeast of Tacoma and about a half hour drive from Seattle, is a growing city in the metropolitan Seattle-Tacoma area.

Originally settled by the Puyallup Tribe, the city’s name means “the generous people.” In the early 1800s, the city was a small town of about 2,000, but in the 1850s, European settlers began to arrive. The town grew rapidly in the late 1800s after Ezra Meeker started a hop farm, attracting residents and money to the area. Meeker was Puyallup’s first mayor.

Meeker’s home, called the Ezra Meeker Mansion, is now a museum that can be rented out for weddings and other social events.

In the early 1900s, due to Tacoma’s population growth and local rail lines, Puyallup kept growing. Today, the city has over 40,000 residents.

The city of Puyallup works hard to be inclusive to people of all ages, focusing on hosting events and clubs for the aging population.

There are many things to do in Puyallup. Notably, many Washington residents know it as the home of the Washington State Fair, the state’s largest fair and one of the ten largest in the country. The fair runs for 21 days in September, with a shorter “spring fair” taking place for 4 days in April.

Puyallup also hosts an annual Daffodil Festival and parade, celebrating the valley’s lush ecosystem. The festival also takes place in nearby towns Tacoma, Sumner and Orting.

The city is known for having a wide range of antiques stores and the largest farmers’ market in its county.

At Apex Moving & Storage, we work with Move for Hunger to provide meals to hungry families in Washington, including those in Puyallup. We’re proud to help our local community by helping donate over 500,000 meals to the hungry.
