Championships won by Seattle’s professional teams
After the Seahawks’ big victory in the Super Bowl, the score is now tied, 2-2.
What score? Championships won by Seattle’s men’s and women’s professional teams.
If you were one of more than 700,000 Seahawks fans who descended on Downtown Seattle for the victory parade, you might be interested to know that Seattle has taken home just four major sports championship titles* in more than 90 years**:
- In 1979 the Sonics defeated the Washington Bullets in the NBA Finals.
- In 2004 and 2010 the Storm took the trophy in the WNBA Finals.
- Last weekend, the Seahawks routed the Broncos 43-8 to win the 2014 NFL Championship.
According to my reckoning, that puts the Women’s sports teams at 2, and now the Men’s teams at 2 as well. It’s all tied up, folks.
But, of course, it’s not really a competition. While the 12th Man concept makes little sense in any sport other than football, we, the proverbial 12th Men and Women, will support all of our Seattle teams one-hundred percent. And we will seize every championship we can.
When the Storm takes home a third trophy at the WNBA Finals, we will celebrate. And we’ll be right there when Sounders FC makes a strong move to pull off a win for the MLS Cup.

* The Sounders FC victories were not included because they haven’t won the MLS Cup yet, although they did win the US Open Cup three times consecutively from 2009 – 2011.
** Seattle’s first and only hockey team, the Metropolitans, were the first American hockey team to win the Stanley Cup way back in 1917. They hung up their blades almost a century ago.
